Wham! Goes Skiing

LAist’s Yuletide/YouTube marathon just keeps on coming with this little ditty.

The Wham! classic, “Last Christmas,” holds the record as the biggest selling single not to top the chart. It reached up to #2 in the UK in December of 1984, shut-out of the top spot by Bob Geldof’s Band Aid megahit “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”

Last Christmas I gave you my heart,
but the very next day, you gave it away.
This year, to save me from tears,
I really wanted to get the band back together. ...Andrew Ridgeley, I’m lookin’ in your direction.

There's a great cover of this song by Erland Oye (of the Kings of Convenience), done in acoustic six-string-Kings-of-Convenience style that takes out all of the cheese, retains the maudlin longing and mixes it with a dash of earnest expressiveness. I found it on what I thought was a pretty obscure Danish or German compliation of Christmas/Winter Songs called "Seasonal Greetings". It's worth checking out.
