The LA Times is reporting that Cardinal Roger M. Mahony announced early this morning that 45 victims of sexual abuse by clergymen will be awarded $60 million in an out-of-court settlement. However, the 45 claims only represent 8% of the 562 alleged cases of sexual abuse by priests.
Cardinal Mahony has been the target of much criticism here in Los Angeles for failing to deal with alleged priest pedophilia properly -- this settlement will mark the first major effort by the LA Archdiocese in correcting the damage.

I find it misleading to state that "the victims...will be awarded $60 million" when, after the attorney take their cut, the victims will in actuality receive barely over half that amount, if that.
What you are "awarded" is different from what you "receive".
Either way it doesn't matter. The point of such a lawsuit is not to give a pile of cash to help soothe the victims' pain, It's to inflict monetary damage on the transgressors so that they re-evaluate how they operate.
freudian to show the pipes of the organ at the cathedral to symbolize the organs of the molestting priests??
