From December 3rd's play, "Impala".

"I want to see a show in every theatre space in LA," I once told a friend a few years back. Thanks to 365 Days/365 Plays, I think I'm going to get pretty damn close. I can also tell people I saw 365 plays in a year, even if it takes about 45 minutes to watch 7 short plays.

The great thing about 365 is that a week night theatre going experience doesn't have to be a full on commitment: no dressing up, no 2-hour play accompanied by an uncomfortable seat, no getting home at 10:30 p.m. to rush to bed to get up in time for work. Last night's showing of plays for November 27 - December 3 with the Playwrights' Arena was no exception.

Director Laurel Ollstein (who will be directing Dogeaters at the Kirk Douglas in 2007) took the 7 days of plays, brought them to the simple setting of The Lutheran Church of the Master and approached it like storytelling theatre. While many of the theatre groups have and will be going full fledged with lighting and sound cues, costumes and other accents, Rivera proves the low-tech straight forward story telling of Suzan-Lori Parks' writing can be just as delightful. Here, at the small church on Santa Monica Blvd., the sound "design" is the church organ and the lighting "design" is, well, the church lighting and some candles.

The next week of plays will be presented by and at The Elephant Asylum Theatre in Hollywood from December 5 - 9. For more info, contact Elephant Stageworks (323) 962-0046 or stay tuned to www.365inLA.com.
