Of All The Suits, Why Did Hip Hop Hold 'Em Choose The Spade?

Although it was fun sitting on our couch eating leftovers this afternoon, waiting for the SC game to get on, once we flipped the dial to KCAL 9, we noticed a newish tv show that made us scratch our head.

Hip Hop Hold 'Em is an urbanized version of the uber-trendy Texas Hold 'Em poker that one can find pros playing on ESPN, and celebs stumbling with on Bravo and E!. What makes this version different is that it's hosted by the former Yo! MTV Raps co-host Ed Lover and features rap and sports stars who are all pretty much African-American.

Which is why we thought that it was odd that the logo of this struggling syndicated show would use the spade as its symbol when it's apparent target audience, African-Americans, probably wouldn't want to associate themselves with the symbol which is historically used as an offensive slur against the minority group.

Broadcasting & Cable reported last month that the program rated 124th out of 124 nationally-rated shows despite its popular celebs who provide lively conversation, and hot young ladies in short dresses who escort the losers from the table to the black leather couches to analyze the rest of the game.

LAist would have chosen any other suit in the pack than what Hip Hop Hold 'Em unfortunately picked.

PokerStars.com, the biggest advertiser of Hip Hop Hold 'Em, is the home of, among other things, Tuesday Night Poker, with one of LA's more popular bloggers, Wil Wheaton.
