Even though he probably deserved the handcuffs for something done off camera (shockingly, no tasers were necessary), we kinda' feel for this guy who ran into trouble at Saturday's USC-Cal game.
Back in 2001 LAist tried to sit in the Cal student section in Berkeley while sporting USC colors. The crowd started chanting "take off that red shirt" (a chant that originates with their hatred of Stanford), and a small mob physically and forcibly pushed this blogger out of the section. How rude.
While popo was laying down the law in the stands, the Trojans were laying down the law on the field. DeShawn Jackson, the wide receiver on the wrong end of that sweet hit, was a highly prized recruit that USC lost to the Bears, and he was a marked man for the entire game.

Go Bears!
Even though we got out asses kicked. I still love you Golden Bears!
yeah, i was sitting in cal section w/ my usc gear on, it definitely wasn't pretty. that dude actually deserved to be arrested, earlier i saw him near me yelling racist remarks at dudes unprovoked. one more thing, CAL SUCKS!
all this usc hype, and yes they're pretty good, but i'd love to see how they would hold up after a season in the SEC.
I have to say that the Cal fans were pretty rude that night. We sat in section 11 which thankfully had more alumni but were situated along the main walkway. Every person walking up the aisle or along the walkway saw 4 brave Trojan fans in the first row. The Cal students were angry, foul-mouthed jerks (and I'm talking about the women-as the video will attest to their violent nature). The men... well, they were stoned, drunk imbeciles with no understanding of personal space-see aforementioned video to that effect. We just sat there quietly during the game, doing NOTHING obnoxious at all, but the Cal fans were cheering violently (that is possible because they were yelling in my now deaf right ear) at us like they won the Pac-10 championship (which they didn't, once again) when they made a 3rd down stop. Another funny anecdote is that a Mexican homey was sporting a USC jersey. We started chatting with him and how he's been a lifelong USC fan. He didn't care that he was sitting in the Cal section and when hippie Cal fans tried to give him grief, he just deadpanned back... they stopped.
Eh, who cares... they lost. I was a Cal fan since my sister went there, but they've lost me forever. We saw the guy getting booted and a rowdy, idiotic fan ought to go. I won't comment about the "USC hype..." post cuz we could go all night on this.
Back in 1999 I was visiting a friend in Columbus, Ohio, and had the opportunity to attend the Buckeyes Vs. Bruins game there. Feeling the stupid need to represent, I also opted to put my health and well-being at risk by wearing UCLA colors while sitting deep in an Ohio State alum/employees section. What an idiot.
Mostly I was left alone because other than the blue and gold jacket I sported, I wasn't unduly demonstative or irritating. I'd politely cheer when UCLA made the occasional nice play or score and I'd even considerately acknowledge when the Buckeyes did something good. But then there was whoever the ass was in the seat behind me. He took great offense to my presence and would clobber his hands together as hard as he could and as close to the back of my head while screaming full bore into my ears whenever the home team would make a good play. Four-yard run or touchdown didn't matter, this guy just wasn't going to let me forget I was a stranger in a strange land.
Fortunately I had enough common sense and patience to go Ghandi and just passively put up with it and ignore him and since UCLA essentially posed no real threat throughout the proceedings, Ohio won and I escaped unscathed as he didn't have any frustration to take out on me afterward. Just taunts of "go home teddy bear!"
