What a loss! He was one of my favorite directors too. Most people know MASH, maybe Nashville, maybe Gosford Park and most recently Prairie Home Companion, but he has so many gems in his collection including The Long Goodbye(1973) and California Split(1974)(both with Elliot Gould),A Wedding(1978) and Three Women(1977)(an absolutely brilliant study of womanhood). Even McCabe and Mrs Miller(1971) isn't well known outside of ardent film lovers, but its poignant performances(let alone its cinematography and soundtrack)make it a must-see. He was definitely an actor's director. His films are so populated because he clearly cared about the human condition and human interaction, about misunderstanding, conflict and acceptance. His films will live on. Thank you the gift you gave us Mr. Altman.......Rest in peace.
