What's Bruin at UCLA: Taserfest Response, B-Ball on Top
The reaction across campus to Tuesday night's tasering of a student by UCPD officers is one of shock and disgust. Many question how tasering is appropriate force against someone who fails to even threaten to strike an officer.
"I realize when looking at these kind of arrest tapes that they don't always show the full picture. ... But that six minutes that we can watch just seems like it's a ridiculous amount of force for someone being escorted because they forgot their BruinCard," said Ali Ghandour, a fourth-year anthropology student.
Edouard Tchertchian, a third-year mathematics student, said he was concerned that the student was not offered any other means of showing that he was a UCLA student.- Daily Bruin
A UCPD press release claims that Mostafa not only resisted arrest, but also "encouraged library patrons to join his resistance." - however the 6-minute video recorded by a student does not depict Mostafa rallying other students at all.
Interim Chancellor Norman Abrams assured that the investigations into this matter will be "thorough, vigorous and fair."

On a lighter note, the Bruins managed to deliver a win last night in their opening game against BYU. They overcame a halftime deficit to defeat BYU 82-69.
Luc Richard Mbah a Moute broke his preseason career high of 17 points by scoring 24 points last night with 11 rebounds to boot. Darren Collison, the sophomore point guard now in place of Jordan Farmar came out swinging as well by scoring a career high 16 points and 10 assists.

The UC Regents met last night at UCLA to discuss many issues including declining diversity on UC campuses, and what action needs to be taken to correct this trend.

I am sickened, I am apalled, I am angry...these officers should be fired and then get their asses handcuffed and tasered. C'mon there are 3 cops there that can be seen, if they wanted him out so bad why did they not carry him out, are they that out of shape. JUSTICE SHOULD NOT BE OVERLOOKED!!!

Hmm. I suggest you start with not preemptively tasering students merely for having a dusky appearance and regarding overweening campus rent-a-cops as a nuisance. Perhaps you could remedy this by firing the cops and giving the student free tuition and a medal. Not that it would prevent the inevitable (and deserved) seven to eight figure lawsuit, but, hey, you go to college with the rentacops you have!

also notable is at the end of the 6 minutes how one uc 'peace officer' told a looky-loo student in the foyer to return to the computer lab or else he would get the taser treatment too.

The UC Regents did not meet at night. They met during the day on Wednesday and Thursday. Most of their discussion about diversity was regarding increasing more funding for academic preparation programs targeting high school students from typically underrepresented communities at the university.
Students and alumni spoke out about the need for greater diversity at the UC in the meeting's public comment section. Later in the morning, students held a protest.
