The Valley Gets Tough on Shopping Carts

Shopping Cart in the LA River

Maybe you've seen them. They might be congregated like an ominous gang in the shadows of the parking lot at the Jons. Maybe a lone one watches you get off the bus while leaning up against a palm tree. Or perhaps you'll see and old one wading in the LA River, frozen, like if it doesn't move you won't notice it.

Shopping carts are loved by small children and the homeless alike, but Van Nuys has had enough of their subtle and mysterious evils, and their councilman has been pushed around by the carts enough.

Yesterday the LA City Council approved a program initiated by councilman Tony Cardenas of the 6th district that would allow anyone in the 6th (Van Nuys, Arleta, Sylmar, and Sun Valley) to call 311 to report a suspicious cart and within 48 hours it will be gone. Justlikethat.

"We are wheeling out the blight in the Valley," Cardenas said in a statement. The six month pilot program will cost $55,000 and the Dept. of Sanitation will do the dirty work.

However, LAist seems to think that if we were given $100k a year, we could probably get around to taking care of a shopping cart problem in a district as small as the 6th too. Once again, we're in the wrong damn biz.

On a related note, LA-based photographer Morgan Hagar makes 'lost' shopping carts the focus of his project, "Abandoned." See it here: http://www.filemagazine.org/projects/abandoned/

where's Bubbles when you need him??? that dude knows his fucking shopping carts!

When will California pass the law to require every shopping cart install with radio control lock to prevent cart push out of certain range? in my openion, the cost will pay for itself in the long run and save our cities.
I hope we'll act fast before we turn into a nation of abandoned carts.
Sincerely,
EC
