Berkeley Measure Would Begin Impeachment Process

Berkeley Measure H

Not that LAist would be at all interested in a full blown White House impeachment scandal to take over the news for the next two years, or anything...

But a symbolic ballot measure in the sleepy town of Berkeley, California, just across the bay from San Francisco, might be the tiny spark that begins to creak the olde fashioned wheels of Checks & Balances that haven't been in use in years in this fine land.

Asking Berkeley voters if impeachment proceedings should begin against the president and vice-president, Measure H, cuts right to the chase and asks a serious question. If the results are overwhelming one way or the other, it might give lawmakers the confidence to ask their own constituents the same question, thus actually representing the will of the voters.

One would also think that if the executive branch was proven to be involved in high crimes, punishment would be swift and blind, so as to send a message to the next group of lawbreakers who abuse the public's trust. Allegedly.

LAist, I'm surprised at you. Don't you realize there is NOTHING worse for the liberal/anti-Bush cause than impeachment? What better way to fire up the Republican base than that? The GOP already uses impeachment rumors to raise funds. Besides, a Berkeley-led impeachment crusade would hardly be seen as a consensus movement.

Methinks you doth overestimate how much this country really wants impeachment, as well. It's disruptive and takes away attention from the real issues without effecting real change. Presumably impeaching Bush and Cheney would leave you with... the Speaker of the House. And this sunny vision of impeachment would suggest that would be Pelosi. That's already assuming the Dems win in November (possible but not a lock). Given the possibility of having another GOP speaker in place, what does impeachment really get you?

Finally, Having Bush in office is great for the Dems in 08 - it'll be like a whack-a-mole.

I'm fine with the site taking a political slant but this heavy-handed approach wins you no converts and, at least in my case, makes the people who share your political views want to dissociate themselves from your causes!

LAist seriously doubts that many of its readers shares its political views.

LAist is a registered Independent, not the slightest bit interested in the success of any party.

LAist is solely interested in the people of the USA. Therefore if a president and vice president are found to be guilty of crimes, we believe that it's in the best interest of the people that those evildoers are punished. Period.

Who the Speaker of the House is interests LAist as much as the current World Series: minimally until a wager is made.

If you think posting a clip from an upcoming California Measure and then suggesting that more Americans voices are formally documented is "heavy handed", then get ready to continue to be "disappointed" but since you have now been warned, you no longer will qualify to pretend to be surprised.

That's so out of character for Berkeley. That place isn't known for it's political involvement

Wow, I'm sure the GOP leadership will really be moved by a motion from the City of Berkeley to impeach Bush. I mean, they've been his most ardent supporters for so long. If the Republicans have lost Berkeley, what's next? Santa Monica? San Francisco? Where is a Republican administration safe?

one reason the current leadership is in the mess that theyre in is that they arent moved by anyone's point of view other than their own. even when theyre proved to be totally incorrect.

the vice president will probably still tell you theres a link between iraq and 9/11.

although you might not think that a measure in berkeley matters, as written in the post, it could be the first step. likewise, if it doesnt get overwhelming support, the GOP could see it as a reprieve.
