LAist Road Trip hits the Grand Canyon

LAist is driving around the country to find the fountain of youth. Currently we're in Arizona to see the Monday Night Football game between the Cardinals and the Chicago Bears. We're here because LA doesn't have a pro football team for some reason.

Yesterday we went to that huge crack in the country called The Grand Canyon. We'd been here before and to tell you the truth, we were less than impressed. Huge crack. Big whoop.

We were also less impressed by the $25 entrance fee to see the crack. How much does it cost to maintain a crack? Seems to be cracking just fine without our $25. Doesn't the National Parks get national money?

Anyways we're almost home now so we'll complain about local stuff soon.

Hi,

Just in case you are interested--the National Park gets very little "national money". They have to rely on entrance fees to handle maintenance of buildings, trails, etc. However, you are correct in stating that the crack is doing fine at maintaining itself; it is continuing to crack at its slow rate.

What Sandy said. Not only has Bush continued to slash the budget for National Parks, he wants to turn over huge amount of mineral and timber rights to multinational corporations with whatever pathetic amount of money collected going back into the general fund and not to the National Park Service. For several years now, oil companies haven't been paying _any_ mineral rights fees, essentially given the green light to steal from the American people. Teddy Roosevelt would be rolling in his grave.
