On Moorpark Street: Planning Drama

From the most recent Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association letter:

Hamburger Hamlet: As previously reported, the owner of ths Hambuger Hamlet building is seeking to sell a major portion of the parking lot to a developer for a condominium project. Because of a dispute with the owner of the remainder of the parking lot, the owner recently fenced off a portion of the parking lot creating chaos for customers and visitors. At a recent meeting of the Land Use Committee of the Sherman Oaks neighborhood council, dismay was expressed at the potential loss of much needed parking for another condo development. Will the Neighborhood Council support the condo project?

Then catty-corner to the Hamlet...

Watergardens/Sherman Oaks Square: The developer/owner of the shopping center on Van Nuys and Moorpark ("In-N-Out Center") presented three versions of plans for the shopping center to the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council. The In-N-Out Burger, the movie theatres and all of the existing businesses would be eliminated to make way for a massive new development, including the Watergardens Condominiums planned in the existing parking lot. Will the Specific Plan that protects Sherman Oaks from over-development be ignored by the Neighborhood Council and the City for the benefit of the developer? Will the community lose more parking areas to condominiums?

It should be noted that I am a member of the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council and am very proud of the growing organization, despite many challenges it presents, as in any government office. However, this newsletter provides an interesting point of view that represents a large and powerful group of residents.
