Why USC Football Is Lame

uscfans.jpg

Because it isn't UCLA football. There isn't much to say other than that. College football has kicked off once again, and like every other Bruin I have to put up with yet another season of Trojan banter. I get to watch every citizen in this great city jump on the Trojan bandwagon once again as well. I feel as though I'm the only person who is completely uninterested in watching a winning team continue to win. Seeing Trojan gear at Wal-Mart yesterday just reinforced what I already believed: USC's success in football is repetitive and boring.

Which is exactly why Bruin football is better. You see, UCLA rocks at everything else; basketball, water polo, volleyball, tennis, and oh yes – academics! Watching Bruin football begin to take shape last year felt rewarding for all Bruins because it felt like we were building something. And UCLA students love to build things – when we're not calculating other things. Dorrell and the fans together took the team to 10:2. But the celebrations hit a bump when we lost the Victory Bell...again.

Every year that we lose the Victory Bell to USC, a little bell of my own rings up inside my brain. And then a little voice in my head reminds me, "It's going to be sweet when we finally win that friggin bell back." The voice is right. I mean, when we eventually win it's going to be bona fide B-list movie material. Who wouldn't watch the movie about how UCLA beat the unstoppable Trojans and all of their mass-marketed glory? Kurt Russell would play Pete Carroll, Denzel would play Dorrell. I'm getting jazzed just thinking about it.

"USC's success in football is repetitive and boring. Which is exactly why Bruin football is better." What? This is the dumbest thing I've read in a while. Success is a good thing, moron.

Sucks to be jealous, huh?

Jealousy is an ugly thing.

I could care less about either team and still I think your story makes you seem sad and pathetic. Dude get a grip its not our fault you could not get into USC.

Some jackass with a USC license plate cut me off today. I hope his team looses >:(

UCLA has the most #1 NCAA titles than any other university. Let's see USC beat that. And then there's the reason why you go to college...academics. USC can't compare to UCLA in that department. It's nice knowing that I did not buy my degree :)

Your complete lack of understanding of what the competiveness of football means, it's history, and it's relevance is telling.

You are, in one word, a HOMER.

The football display the Trojans have put on for the last three years was nothing short of spectacular, especially in this era of reduced scholarships and increased participation.

Half the teams in the Pac-10 beat them up every year for the better part of a decade before Carroll got there. No Trojan supporter myself, I can appreciate what they've accomplished as a University of Michigan alum who views our Rose Bowl beating a few years ago as proof that hard work and good coaching can revive a once proud program.

Support your program, but respect the game. Give them the props they deserve.

You post is all sour grapes.

Only racists support UCLA (2% black freshman) over USC (6% black undergrads).

Who would have thunk that the public school (because it's in ritzy Bel Air/Westwood) would be more elitist than the private school that has community support in its impoverished South L.A. neighborhood?

When you mention reduced scholarships, are you referring to the NCAA restricting USC' football scholarships in 02-03 as a response to a USC scandal? I believe it involved football players not having to do their class work because tutors were being used to do it for them. Notice that UCLA has some of the highest academic requirements for the football team, and that the average GPA for UCLA's team this year is 3.8. You should also recognize that it is for this reason that many SC and Cal players were not able to play for UCLA.

Rascist, even?

I'm a Cal fan. Does that make me a dirty hippie?

(I don't want to hear anything about Tennessee.)

I like tailgating with people from either school. But once things get started, the games are a little longer on the USC side. The SC people in the stands always seem to care a little more, which bugs me a little more.

The funny thing is about sitting with USC fans---they're always very uneasy about their team when the game is underway. They're not comfortable with anything less than a thirty-five point lead. They're largely fatalists, there's no reassuring them, and even if the present game going well, they're worried about some other upcoming game. The Bruin faithful don't seem so invested, and thus its more relaxed in the stands. It's easier to enjoy a game with Bruins than with Trojans.

USC average SAT: 1368
UCLA average SAT: 1345

Henry -- In referring to reduced scholarships, I meant that the elite programs can no longer stock-up on all of the football talent in a given region like they used to be able to.

See: Oklahoma/Michigan/USC/Alabama/etc. circa the early and middle years of last century.

Because these programs can no longer just bury these players 4 deep on their rosters, other programs have access to players that other wise would have been back-ups, thus creating more balance. team that can dominate these days is therefore more imprsessive than the teams that steamrolled people in previous decades.

Early ARMY teams are another example that goes back even further. No matter how many talented players want to play for Notre Dame, they have a fixed amount of scholarships to offer, so most talented players will go to a team that has an available scholarship for them/.

Increased participation also increases the amount of players available for college level ball which in effect lessens the gap between the football haves and have-nots of yester year.

I'm a little surprised to see such a biased article on this site, hasn't LAist always shown equal love/coverage to both schools? I feel it's uncalled for to generally attack USC and its football team for no other reason than finding Trojan merchandise at Wal-mart.

Oh, and by the way, USC was No. 1 in men's water polo last year. Just a fact I thought the readers would want to know.

-The Downtown Diner (who also happens to be a loyal USC student)

USC is the reigning men's water polo champ, but UCLA is the current women's water polo champ. I'm betting that is what Kim was referring to (hfg).

Meh. Of course it's biased. It's an op-ed and gets people talking to each other. There's nothing wrong with a little back and forth banter between USC and UCLA on this site. Don't be surprised when we get a a jingoistic USC student here to write the USC point of view. Let the battles begin!

Who from Art Center wants to debate CalArts with me?

Hhhmmm. UCLA fans admitting to shopping at the putrid Walmart? I guess that says it all!

USC fans are totally obnoxious.

I can see how difficult it is for you to continue to be a loser!
Do you honestly believe ucla tries to lose football games so that they won't appear boring!
Dumb de dumb dumb!

Jose Habib,
UCLA (and other UCs) take a students best SAT score from a single sitting. USC asks on their application for the best score for Critical Reading, Writing and Math. The difference? Well, for me it would have been 1330 to 1290. UCLA also has higher ranked professional schools in business, medicine, law and education. The schools are both strong in their own areas and good for different students, but there is a reason why UCLA gets more applications than any other institution.

HAHHAHAHAHAHAH thanks for the wonderful laugh haha this made my week, what kind of an education to you get at UCLA to actually believe that they lose on purpose to make things interesting... hahahahahaha... it's ok maybe i would be the same way if I kept loseing to a infinitly better team haha.... oh and they get more applications cause they are cheaper to go to cause its a public university Jose. Not to mention it is smarter to take the best scores on the SAT like that besides our average SAT scores are so much higher all together i doubt it makes much a difference... besides just cause were are proud of our school cause we are so successful in so many aspects doesn't mean that we are obnoxious on the contrary i find this post and the comments against USC quiet obnoxious lol ... have fun well c u at the rose bowl ... again...

oh ya one more thing although u are better at bball we had to give u somehting lol, besides we beat u one time last yr in bball, and our water polo team yet again won the nation championship so i dont c how UCLA is better at that...

I would like to thank number9angel for proving Gary's point...

get a grip. UCLA is NOT better at everything else either. that is another stupid story you westwood whiners keep telling yourselves. add in the non "ncaa" national football championships and the 2 schools are even. and the "better academics" storyline ended about 15 years ago. UCLA football is a joke. stick to basketball.

WTF?? USC is better than UCLA in pretty much every sport other than basketball. USC ranks 27 as an academic inst. UCLA 26.. USC will overtake UCLA next year in that department...

You are a tool man...

Leave it to a Bruin to actually find satisfaction in losing. But, I guess when its something you do so well, you have to find the positive aspects of it. . . .

PS- Just a heads up, I think people stopped using the word "rocks" the year you guys last beat us.

Henry - Thanks for starting up some good ol' fashioned smack talk! I'm looking forward to some more (good natured, of course) between our two fine institutions. Remember to root for the Pac OOC (out of conference) ... Go Bruins, Beat the Domers!

I love the racist comment about 2% and 6%...its funny how it says 2% freshman and 6% undergrad. There is a huge difference between FRESHMAN and UNDERGRADUATES. Freshman is one class undergrads is the entire student body not enrolled in graduate school. Elitist my ass. UCLA is affordable unlike 43k a year. UCLA makes it harder to get into their university through academics not through finances.

You are a complete idiot. How can you say there success is repetitive and boring. Last I checked succeding in something never gets old. Bruins SUCK. They got lucky they won. Just wait till next year. RB Joe Mcknight is gonna run all over you guys.
