LA is Nicer than London?

rodneyking.jpg

Our mates across the pond at Londonist let us know that our city is being praised for its politeness. According to the Telegraph, the city of Angels lived up to its name when it was visited by a UK journalist who was impressed by how cool we were to him -- embodying the laid-back surfer image.

Yet, after all, LA is hardly a backwater and everyone you stopped to ask for help with directions or advice seemed delighted and had all the time in the world. There, people stepped back and gestured you forward. Cars paused and their drivers smiled. What is it about us on this small island of ferocity? We should revive the verb "to surl".
We might be sweeter, but the Brits have two things going for them that Londonist links to: 1) Free Pole Dancing Lessons 2) Strip Poker Championships.

While those things might fit better in the Naughty column instead of the Nice one, it sure is better than a poke in the eye (or a taser next to a Hyundai).

All the more reason not to travel to Europe, which is a bit overrated. I say we all spend our travel dollars here in the Americas!

If you want to see old Baroque cathedrals, go to Guanjuato, Mexico. If you want good Italian food and uppity people, go to Argentina. And if it's pole dancing lessons you need, well look no further than right here in Los Angeles (www.sfactor.com).

My mother, visiting from Melbourne, Australia last year, delighted in of all things, the manners of drivers in Los Angeles. "They let people in here..." she commented (on that and everything else). Pretty funny. Not that she could ever live here, she also said. (She comes from a city with practically the worst or rudest drivers on earth, however, in my opinion)

Wait, what?

Polite driving and Los Angeles in the same sentence? Honestly, you need to drive in other cities in the US for more perspective. Among other cities in which i've lived, LA comes near the bottom when it comes to courtesy on the road.

Please dont call a visit to London, "doing Europe". London is still one of the largest cities in the world... ahead of a lot of those in "the states" :P
