the good news - The Valley's Orange Line bus is a big hit: after just 7 months, it carries 22,000 passengers a day. It wasn't expected to reach those levels for another 14+ years.

the good news pt 2 - Crime is down! Murder is down 10.8% citywide, overall crime down by 11%. Chief Bratton is smiling.

the bad news - South LA accounts for 43% of all the homicides in the city — while only being home to 13% of the city's population.

the bad news, pt 2 - Officer Kristini Ripatti, who was shot in the chest by a suspect whose bullet snaked through the armhole of her bulletproof vest, is paralyzed. Doctors do not predict a full recovery.

congrats - Yesterday was graduation day for students at CalTech and the Los Angeles Police Academy Magnet schools.

see a blogger - Today outgoing LAist editor Carolyn has a yard sale in advance of her move to Pittsburgh. See the vintage furniture and fun detrius that won't make the trip — and the blogger who will — at Berendo & 1st in Koreatown.
