AM news: Oakwood, Glendale, teachers and students

venicecanal.jpg

death in venice - The shooting death of 17-year-old Agustin Contreras on the grounds of Venice High prompts the LA Times to look closely at the Oakwood neighborhood in Venice. What does the paper find but rich and poor, gangs and million-dollar homes, crammed together with an understandable dose of anger. Could this be a window into the future of Los Angeles?

a new Americana - Or maybe the future of LA looks a lot like The Grove? The new Americana Mall at Brand broke ground in Glendale yesterday — it's being developed by the same people who brought us The Grove. Where in Glendale can you fit a 15.5 acre outdoor mall, you ask? Across the street from the Galleria, of course.

no apple for teacher? - Manhattan Beach Unified School District is not making nice with its teachers, who have been working without a contract for a year. A negotiator is being brough in to try to bring the two sides together. The sticking point: salaries.

not funny - A senior prank at Corona High School didn't turn out as planned when administrators got pissed about glued locks and damage to campus. 7 seniors won't be able to participate in graduation activities and may face criminal charges. Next time, guys, try stealing a cannon.

Oakwood is not the Venice Canals. Wouldn't it have been more appropriate to have someone go down and take a pic of the community center in Oakwood? I'd like to think that blogs could get this right. Just because mainstream tv and other consumerist pubs feel the need to misleadingly use stock photos for every damn story doesn't mean you LAist must do the same. Your readers should be able to expect better of you.

LAist often uses Creative Commons photos from Flickr, which are taken by everyday Angelenos by you and me. I'm sure BlueAlgae would be flattered that you think her pic is stock photo quality.

That said, if you run down to Oakwood and take a picture of a community center or Dennis Hopper's house, email it to us and we'll replace hers with it. The e-mail link is at the top o' the page.

It is a really nice photo, regardless.
