So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye

I've been editor of LAist since December and it's been great. Many days have gone by like this photo, sitting at my dining room table with my laptop — although often in my pajamas. Luckily there's no picture of that.

But now I'm packing up the dining room table and the rest of my apartment to move to Pittsburgh. By the end of the summer I'll be taking classes in a building called The Cathedral of Learning (no kidding), beginning my MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Pittsburgh. My last day in the city will be June 13.

What does that mean for LAist? A lot and not so much. In terms of a lot, our big daddy Gothamist has plans for the site. If I told you what they are, I'd have to kill you, so for now let's just say there may be some big changes this summer. But not so much because in the meantime, the dutiful LAist contributors will continue to post. Be nice to them. Give them tips. They're working hard.

Me, I won't be starting Pitt-ist (or Burgh-ist — I don't even know the nickname of my new city yet). I'll be doing some posts here until the time I leave, but you'll sense my presence fading away (so if you want to get in any last-minute digs, KneeJerk, you better hurry). Thanks to everyone for coming to read LAist and add your two cents while I've been at the helm. I think our contributors' writing is fantastic and I know I'll be reading from Pittsburgh, trying to stave off homesickness.

Until then, if you've got any spare moving boxes, I'm looking.

Recently discovered LAist, and while I was a bit disappointed to discover that it was part of a larger group of "franchised" city-based blogs, I got enough of a sence of you and the contributors knowing the city that I thought I would give it a chance.

I have quite enjoyed the past two months of posts, and I am terrified to hear that handful of New Yawkers have "plans" for my favorite LA blog. I will remain cautiosly optimistic about the future, and in the meantime I look forward to your remaining commentary on my city of angels.

Best of luck...
Johnny (LA Native)

LA is going to miss you Carolyn. I've loved reading LAist with you at the helm! Good luck in the Pitts to the Burgh.

Best of luck, Carolyn.

I'm gonna miss your words C.

Let me know if you still need those boxes...

G

boxes, yes! e-mail me and I'll come get 'em. and thanks, everyone.

wow! That is heartbreaking news. Your insights and writing style have made this site so terrific.

You can't learn anything better at a writing program! I hope you enjoy your new adventure and how it unfolds.

Good luck! But maybe you can reconsider. UCR has a growing MA creative writing program. Forget the boxes. Be close to home. Do ieist!

If not, I look forward to your first novel from Pitts.

Us here in LA will miss you.

Carolyn! Say it ain't so! Yer like THE reason I became a regular reader!

Still, thanks for intro'ing me to other great bloggers at LAist. Will miss you much though. Sniff :`(

When I lived in Baltimore, our nickname for your new city was "Shittsburgh." But that had more to do with the Steelers. Don't become a Steelers fan. Please.

Hey Carolyn, sad to see you go (and sad to see LAist lose your voice)... but best of luck!

Carolyn:

What can I say? For once - I'm at a loss for words that can equally express my selfish sadness at your leaving, and my profound excitement for you and the adventures that lie ahead.

Thanks for all you've done for the LAFD in this and your past enterprises, and please accept our best wishes for continued success in The Keystone State.

Wherever life may take you, please always know that there's a warm cup of coffee with your name on it and plenty of room at our firehouse kitchen table.

With warmest regards and best wishes,

Carolyn! Who am I going to argue with and continually correct now!
No matter our disagreements, I appreciated your work here. Good luck in (yes, it IS called that) Shittsburgh.

Aw nuts! Taking off before we got to have that Blogging.la vs LAist food fight. Good luck with everything!

June 13! I remember you telling me your plans to exit LA, but I didn't realize it was so soon! Criminy!

I've greatly enjoyed your work here at LAist, and especially our several "Coffee Across Sunset" meet-ups. Maybe we can get one more in at Millie's or Eat Well before you go solve the mysteries of Pittsburgh.

All the best to you, Carolyn!

PS. I have a pretty good supply of moving boxes stuck down in the basement. They're yours if you want them!

Sadly, I can't get "Another one bites the dust" out of my head.

I hope you know I think the world of you and the job you've done with laist over the past 6 months.

Now who am I going to share blog gossip with in the mornings?

Great work on LAist, Pinky. The site's a better read now than ever before. Marvelous things ahead.

So long Pinky...you'll be missed by the crew at 261 Fig...

Got some boxes if you want them too. Nice fresh U-Haul boxes. And packing tape. Lots of packing tape.

Lemme know if you need supplies.

Enjoy the Burgh and the Cathedral (I thought it was the Cathedral of Knowledge, but either way it is the coolest - and tallest - building in town). Best of luck!

Bye. You can get boxes thru Craig's List if you can put up with that mentality.

great work carolyn!

ive got boxes too!
