LAist Watches 'X-Men: The Last Stand'

We have to thank KCRW for bringing us Joe Morgenstern from the Wall Street Journal, who delivers weekly movie reviews in prose that mellifluously flow into our aural space. Most of the time we agree, but we were surprised at his review of the latest installment of the X-Men series.

"Terrifically entertaining... a single great idea."

We're thinking more along the lines of "mildly entertaining... a few cheesy moments." If you witnessed X2: X-Men United, you might remember such characters and moments that made it a great movie like Night Crawler (where was he in X3?) and Bryan Singer's beautifully directed opening scene in the White House against the musical backdrop of Mozart's Requiem. Now, a new director for X3 steps in and spills that fine wine, cleaning it up wth gimics, errr... boxed Asti Spumante.

We're not saying we didn't enjoy ourselves, but for a popcorn movie, we are still hungry for more and it has nothing to do with MSG. But you decide, or take Joe's word for it: "When the organizing idea is strong, you don't worry about whether it's live or computer generated, you simply sit back and enjoy the spectacle"
