LAist Watches: An Inconvenient Truth

earth1.jpg

Truth be told, LAist hasn’t been dying to see a movie on opening night for a long, long time. But there is just something about global climate change as a result of a consumption-driven society that just gets us all in the mood – so we headed out to the ArcLight this week to see An Incovenient Truth. YOU MUST GO SEE THIS MOVIE. It will change your life, or at least the way you think, if you let it. It is a truly touching and captivating documentary that intertwines the science of global warming with former Vice President Al Gore's personal history and longtime commitment to communicating the need to reverse the effects of global climate change. We thought it would be more Michael Moore kicking ass and taking names, but its message is a quieter and hopefully less partisan one. You are to walk away not in dispute over anything in the film and rather feeling like something has to be done about this problem.

Point blank, there are just inescapable moral dilemmas based on scientific evidence that cannot be disputed. Also interesting is that Paramount Classic’s have committed 5% of their domestic theatrical from for the film with a minimum guarantee of $500,000 to be donated to a bipartisan group that focuses on climate efforts, Alliance for Climate Protection.

Are there flaws to the film? Of course – the largest being the possible conflict of interest in Mr. Gore carrying around his iBook like a security blanket when he happens to sit on Apple’s Board of Trustees. But that is a small point, and the message of the film is more important than critics chastising the film on situations such as these.

Directed by Davis Guggenheim, “AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH” was produced by Laurie David, Lawrence Bender and Scott Z. Burns. Jeff Skoll, Davis Guggenheim, Diane Weyermann, Ricky Strauss and Jeff Ivers are the executive producers and the co-producer is Lesley Chilcott. The film opens in New York and Los Angeles on May 24 and will expand to every major market across the country.

With an opening B.O. of $125,000, Paramount hopes people are listening to you!

Hey, even Leinart had a hard start! We'll see how it pans out! The marketing for it sucks, and people are pretty stupid for the most part -- they'd rather see dreck like DaVinci Code or m:i:3 (i like bad hollywood movies, but come on!).... It's a documentary - with very few exceptions (like Fahrenheit 911 or Supersize Me!) they're never on fire but A) like EARTH IN THE BALANCE there will probably be college courses that use this as part of the core curriculum ( ever take Anderson @ USC boi? best field trip ever!) and B) it should have decent DVD sales because it's not dependent on dolby digital and crazy engulfing visual effects, so it can be enjoyed the same on a tv at home as in a theater.

The New York article about Gore last week was very well done. He gives me hope, more so than any other possible candidates right now.
