Anyone who drives northbound through the Valley during the evening rush hour toward the 405/5 merge, knows this particular tunnel just past Rinaldi. It's a tunnel that somehow, mysteriously takes control of drivers hands, forcing them to lay on the horn in either short staccato bursts or in one long-ass honk.
It's as if cars and drivers are venting their frustration of being caught day in and day out in one of the slowest traffic spots in SoCal, saying, "We're mad as hell, but we have to take it some more..."
Why do you honk through that tunnel? And yeah, we're talking to you.

As long as I can remember I've always honed through that tunnel.. An ex of mine used to live up there and onetime she got all mad when she thought people were honking at her. Once I explained it she joyously joined in on the fun
Honking through tunnels is a driving tradition, not just in that particular spot. I believe it derives from a time when tunnels were so narrow as to only accommodate one car; a driver entering the tunnel would honk to alert anyone coming from the opposite side to wait before entering because the tunnel was "occupied." Without this alert, they might meet head-on in a dark tunnel and not know it until... BONK.
Think of it as a beep of consideration rather than a honk of impatience.
I honk in tunnels to hear the echo. sometimes other people honk back. beep! beep!
I love when a million people honk and there is no reason, its funny, all commutes should have a tunnel!
I like the honking! It's everyone's chance to be a kid again and just delight in something random, like the sound of the beep echoing through the tunnel, and share the moment with other poor souls stuck in standstill traffic.
