The MacAthur Park rally

macarthurpark.jpg

We went to the pro-immigration rally that gathered at MacArthur Park today and skedaddled home to post some photos as the march got under way. How many were there, we're not sure. 15,000? 50,000? 200,000? We couldn't find a decent vantage point to count all the people in white t-shirts.

Mayor Villaraigosa, who organizers had thought might attend, had a great view. LAist learned that he was in a helicopter overhead with Chief Bratton — they might show up at the other end of the march (then again, they might not). So the biggest celebrity on the ground was Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave); we got a pic of him. It's in our Flickr photostream.

The news were saying 500,000 - but I'm not sure how accurate those numbers were, or if that was the total for all rallies and marches in SoCal.
I'll be able to post photos as soon as I get home.

This just in: Antonio Villaraigosa has earmarked $500,000 to plant trees on Wilshire so his "gente" can march in the shade.

I just heard on the news that there was hardly any traffic on the free ways during rush hour. How about that for "A day without immigrants!"

The protest was excellent, had to be a million people streaming past our office in macarthur park. However, the LAPD beating the protesters in Los Angeles.

Lo-Fi, but read the description, and watch some of the other videos from the MacArthur Park metro station and around.
