I remember discussing this a little with Jake Dobkin (publisher for the whole network) once when he was in town. He loves the name LAist, but I do think Angelist sounds pretty. On the other hand, while "Gotham" is a recognizable nickname, the more cities join the network, the more I appreciate that the names of the cites make it pretty clear which city they describe -- I'm not sure I'd recognize nicknames for, say, Shanghai or Miami. You could try e-mailing Jake and see what he says!

Binky's right--the question has nothing to do with "the." I kind of like the sound of "Angelist," but at this point it's probably too late to change.

And "LAist" still sounds better than some of the sister sites' names (though the actual sites are lovely). Is "Seattlest" and adjective? "Parisist?"

Finally, the post asks who, not where.

Yes, Hexodus & Will & our e-mail friends, you're right, it's the Bradbury building. And while you're good, Will, you're not quite right: the photographer had eaten thai food for lunch at Grand Central Market, just across Broadway.

Agh, what's in a name, eh? But in that photo I'm banking the subject matter is the interior of the historic and world-famous Bradbury (at Broadway and 2nd Street, downtown). More specifically the photographer is in the lobby shooting the north-side elevator, having just finished breakfast down the street at Clifton's. Man, I'm goood!

It seems like that person's question was aimed more at renaming the site "Angelist" (vs. "LAist") and the word "the" wasn't really important or the intended focus of the question. I think if that had been the focus the person might have suggested renaming the site as "the LAist" as well.
