Around the world in one camera

LA photoblogger Wojtek Gil had an idea: what if one camera went around the world with just one roll of film. It would land in the hands of 36 people in 36 very different places; each would get one shot. Then they'd send the camera off to the next exotic locale.

Today, Wojtek's little camera departs for its first destination: Veracruz, Mexico.

It's not a particularly fancy camera: it's a Lomo, which shoots 4 mini frames per exposure. Hopefully it's durable enough to make it from Veracruz to Vancouver to Ireland and Iceland and all the rest. In fact, he's still looking for people to round out the Lomo's trip: if you know a photographer in Russia, India, Thailand, Kenya or any of the other not-yet-represented countries, tell 'em about the worldtraveling camera.

The camera will also travel with a journal, in which the photographers are encouraged to write about their shot. And while the photos won't be seen until the roll is developed, there is of course a blog to follow the camera's progress along the way.
