At 10:25am this morning, it's Norooz — Persian New Year. There was an advance celebration at City Hall on Friday and the Downtown News has the story of the holiday, which is little-known outside of the Iranian (or "Irangeleno") community.

The Daily News reports that DWP workers racked up $51 million in overtime in the last half of 2005. The DWP says it's cheaper to pay existing employees overtime than hire new staff.

It's the biggest news for couch potatoes since Jim Fixx died while jogging in 1984: yesterday's LA Marathon felled two participants. Raul Reyna was 53 and James Leone was 60; both apparently had heart attacks and died as they ran the race.

Around 2:00 this morning a pickup truck flew off the (elevated?) 91 freeway, clipped overhead Blue Line train wires and burst into flames as it landed, top-down, next to the tracks. The three people in the truck were killed. Trains have been routed around the accident site; authorities say it will take about 2 days to repair the damage.

Donald Trump's wife Melania has given birth to the couple's first child, a boy. No word on his height and weight, but we're assuming he's huuuuuuuuuge.
