Tomorrow is the day that anyone can be Irish, so long as they're sporting something green, hoisting a pint of Guinness, and most likely trying to wrap their tongue around an Irish brogue. In fact, most folks will salute St. Patty's Day by drinking like an Irishman (or woman), but to round out the experience, LAist would like to help folks eat like the Irish in LA.

So what is Irish cuisine? One can always begin with a little history; you'll be sure the potato factors in prominently from the mid 17th century on. So to eat like the Irish traditionally would, it's going to be about meat, potatoes, and dairy. Those brave enough to cook can try out some recipes for such fare as Colcannon (potatoes, cabbage, and milk-pictured, center), Irish Stew, Irish Soda Bread, Boxty (a sort of bread-style potato dish), or the classic Corned beef and cabbage.

But if your Irish eyes are smilin' on some green beers with some pals at the pub, most likely you'll be able to eat Irish where you've bellied up. Places like Tom Bergin's, O'Brien's, and Ireland's 32 have menus that include some form of pub fare, from the British bangers and mash to the traditional Irish offerings. Of course, if you're out sampling Irish Whiskys, food may well be the last thing on your mind.

For us, and our fellow -ists in Chicago and New York, our St. Patrick's Day eating was once all about McDonald's Shamrock shake, which we had to try to describe to someone who'd never heard of it the other day. At some point that electric green, minty milkshake stopped popping up on the menu this time of year, and there's actually a movement going to Bring Back the Shamrock Shake!
