Films This Week(end)

Duck Season

If you hit boredom this weekend, maybe a movie about overcoming boredom will suit the bill. Duck Season is a Mexican indie comedy where the XBOX breaks, the neighbor girl comes over to bake, and the pizza boy won’t leave (we wouldn’t pay a 30 minute delivery guarantee if it were 11 seconds late either!). Duck Season plays at the Laemmle’s Sunset 5, Monica 4, and the Playhouse 7 in Pasadena.

For only on week at the Nuart, cult author J.T. LeRoy’s best-selling novel, The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, will bless Los Angeles with its dark look at a fringe life in this country. If you don’t know who J.T. LeRoy is, it is an interesting story. Starring, written and directed by Asia Argento, the film includes Peter Fonda, Marilyn Manson, Jeremy Renner, Michael Pitt, and Winona Ryder at one point. Written in a voice of anger, LA Weekly really didn’t like it calling it “bloated,” among other things. They weren’t that impressed with Duck Season either (same link, scroll down).

In person, Jem Cohen will screen his film, Chain, at REDCAT on Monday. Cohen archives miniatures of life and splices them together into a documentary of fiction (or something like that). We are not really sure what to expect, but the Village Voice calls it "a dreamlike travelogue."

And if you missed it below, The Other Venice Film Festival 2006 (in its 3rd year) will begin next Thursday.
