AM news: the bad Cunningham, new labor leader

One-time congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham has been sentenced to more than 8 years in jail for taking $2.4 million in bribes from defense contractors. His crime included not paying $1 million in taxes. Cunningham told the court that he'd fought in Vietnam "because it was the right thing to do." If that was the case (and we think it's an arguable point), his moral compass has since slid out of whack.

Maria Elena Durazo has been named the interim head of the LA County Federation of Labor; she'll be the first woman to lead the organization, which is the nation's largest labor coucil. The prior head, Martin Ludlow, resigned recently after campaign funding irregularites were brought to light by the LA Times.

Four men tried to rob a bank in Long Beach by targeting armored trucks making a delivery — but their attempt was foiled. Three escaped and a fourth was seriously injured in a shoot-out.
