Hey, I live on that block of Gramercy and I was surprised at how little the police were willing to tell me. When I came back from my boyfriend's house I inquired from a few police men and each gave me conflicting stories. I called the police station who didn't pick up the phone all eveining and I checked their website today with no avail. I have an extreme interest in the nature of this case and would appreciate anyone who knows any pertinent details. Thanks

About half of the people I mentioned live in houses that, assuming they own them, they could sell and move to suburbia, so I think they are choosing to be there. I'm sure there are people who would prefer to live elsewhere, though.

The people you mention in your last sentence are doing what they can: just getting on with life. They would move to suburbia if they could afford to, though. More than schools, I think, crime--or at least the perception thereof--is the leading factor that drives people to move out of cities.

A city that wants to keep itself healthy, vital, and desirable has to have public safety as its #1 priority. This means aggressive law enforcement activity, yes, but also treatment of root causes: not poverty so much as despair and apathy.
