Farmer’s Market Update

It’s been a blizzard on the East Coast, winds are picking up across the plain states and well – let’s be honest. We’re lucky to be here in Southern California, even with the strangely high temperatures and bizarre traffic. One of LAist's sure ways to feel part of our neighborhood and save a few bucks at the same time is to hit up the local Farmer’s Market. You can find the closest one to you on FarmerNet.

So if you’ll be feeling like going but late nights have been keeping you in bed, maybe this fresh fruit and veggies update will help get you back into organic territory. This week asparagus is really starting to come out. The strawberries are looking ripe and many merchants have at least two different kinds, try them both to see which you like best. You can find lots of brussel sprouts, cauliflower, carrots, celery, oranges, tangerines and greens for salad. On the decline are root vegetables and there are less apples.

Don’t forget at most markets you can also find organic eggs, fresh cheese and nuts, flowers and plants and fresh bread, pastries and homemade goods.

Two current favorites are pink navels, a mix of a navel orange and a blood orange – and kale, like spinach rich in vitamins and nutrients. Sorry, you’re on your own for the cooking part.
