Will Abramoff touch SoCal?

abramoff_jan06.jpg

This morning authorities announced that Jack Abramoff will plead guilty to fraud charges in Washington and Miami, allowing him, as the AP writes, "to cooperate in a massive government investigation of influence peddling involving members of Congress."

If you haven't been following what Wonkette called, somewhat prematurely, Abramoffukkah (it arrived a little late this year), here's the gist. Jack Abramoff is a big bad lobbyist who hung tight with the Republican elite. He helped raise money for their campaigns, and exactly how he shuffled millions around underneath his walnut shells was, well, fraudulent.

Now powerful Republicans on the Hill are worried that Abramoff's corruption may touch them. "20 lawmakers and aides" (AP again) may be the target of a Justice Department investigation. We wonder, are Californians among them? Our congressional delegation is decidedly Democratic. But we've got some bigshot OC and San Deigo Republicans in the House. Could Abramoffukkah be coming, with its unwanted gifts, for them?

As a committed lefty, I must nonetheless be fair and make the observation that Abramoff donated (or shifted) money to Democrats as well. Having said that, Abramoff is certainly a Republican, and all of his closest friends and associates are Republicans. I will make a bold prediction and state that no Democrats will be indicted of anything as a result of the Abramoff mess. And let me quote a novelty item I saw for sale on the internet years ago: a license plate frame that stated "This license plate was made by Bush and Cheney." That joke is, day by day, coming closer and closer to reality.

Dear Editors and Readers,

Does this new nickname for the Abramoff scandal in DC sound a bit on
the anti-semitic side? or is it just funny? or am I missing something.
Abramoff is Jewish, Hannukah is a Jewish holiday, what's the JOKE
HERE? i don't get it. I don't LIKE it. but here
it is all over the web and blogs now.

Is this the new hip, cool antisemitism of today, or it is just funny
and some people just don't GET it? Okay, then enlighten me: why give
the scandal a Jewish sounding nickname playing on Hannukkah?

Why not the usual Abramoffgate......

Someone needs to ANSWER for this sick nickname, and I say this as a
left leaning Democrat from way back who thinks JA is in big doodoo and
should pay for whatever crimes he may have committed, sure. But to
call the scandal by a Jewishish nickname, that is scandalous! OICH!

What is happening to America?

It's a play on Chrismukkah, the fictional hybrid of commercialized Christmas & Hannukkah as popularized by the TV show The O.C. -- it's just about the timing of when the Abramoff s**t was going to hit the fan. No vast WASP conspiracy.

Hi Caroline,
Yes, I do understand the play on words and the timing, and of course it is NOT a huge vast WASP conspiracy, I never said that. Actually, the porte manteau was coined by a Jewish guy. So there. But I still feel it is inappropraite. Grill JA on his crimes, but leave his religious background out of it, UNLESS those crimes were committed as religious work. They weren't. We never nentioned Nixon's religion or Fitzgerald's religion in Watergate or Fitzmas, do why bring up JA's Jewishness? I know, a Jewish guy started this, someone in DC writing for Wonkette. But still..

Even Jon Stewart, nice Jewish guy on TV, he also mentioned on his show Twice last night that JA was an Orthodox Jew, who only committed his crimes 24/6 , not 24/7, get it? HA HA!

What is wrong with America these days?

Emale me if yu know...
