Slight Indulgence

Chocolate mousse, rocky road ice cream and apple pie à la mode are all delicious. Unfortunately, they're off limits to Vegans. That doesn't mean veggie-lovers are left out in the culinary cold. Thankfully, California serves up some of the best Vegan desserts in the continental United States.

Health-conscious Angelenos will try just about anything to fit into board shorts and bikinis. From carrot juice to chickenless buffalo wings, restaurants can afford to serve up strange, low-fat, dairy-free veggie options that might fall flat elsewhere. Our hippie culture also embraces raw, unprocessed alternatives to the Hostess Twinkies and Little Debbie Star Crunch Cosmic Snacks. All of this benefits the strict vegetarians in town.

Our weekend pick for a healthy treat is the Newsroom Cafe's Vegan fruit tart. We were pleasantly surprised to find that this dish actually lived up to the "dessert" moniker. The tart resembles apple pie, with a smooth, moist texture and sweet taste. The creamy, vanilla Vegan ice cream also fooled our taste buds (and the palletes of a few carnivores who curiously took a few bites).

So, treat yourself to a slight indulgence over the long weekend. Leave the guilt (and Twinkies) at home.
