Echo Expansion

echopetition.jpg

It appears that The Echo, Echo Park's neighborhood live music/film screening/wine tasting/BBQ/book signing venue, is looking to expand. The club, which is associated with another Eastside institution—Spaceland—is planning to add enough space for 700 more people. This expansion, much like the controversy over other building projects around the city, has met it's fair share of opposition, so The Echo is looking for supporters to sign a petition in favor of the plan.

And if you don't support it, there isn't much recourse for you. We suppose not signing the petition will have to do.

I love the Echo, but 700 more people would radically change the venue. I guess another club would open to fill the need of a smaller bands and artists, as there's no way 900 people are turning out for a lot of the current bands they book there.

Or maybe they request 700 because they know the city will only approve a 1/3 of that? I wonder what the plan is.

They aren't changing the venue upstairs. A second space, accessible only via Glendale (basically downstairs from the area you know and love as the Echo) is being renovated for the "new" venue. It would be two areas at one address. And it is so good for our neighborhood. Right now it is a massive wasted space that you see a glimpse of when you go to the BBQ and flea market events.

I'm totally for a renovation of that place. It seriously needs it. But I don't know how I feel about an expansion. There's already parking issues and the parking that is available is completely residential which sucks for the neighborhood because there's already huge issues with crowds in the parking lot, theft, vandalism, all around disturbance and disturbance, etc. If they can actively be more resposible for their patrons actions in the neighborhood I'm sure people wouldn't have a problem with the expansion.

I agree the parking on the east side is just not happnening. Most of the residential streets are converting to parking permit zones and the only places to park would be on susnet or glendale and those are usually very scarce even on a non event night. I loathe going to spaceland or wherever because i know if i park on the street i will get some lame ass ticket. Maybe it's ok to have this sort of policy on the west side 'cause there are parking lots and garages all over there but on the eastside you dont have that because it's primarily residential. This wasn't a problem till recently. Gotta love gentrification y'all...
