If you're still in search for the best waffle, unfortunately it's not in LA but in Solvang at the Belgian Cafe. If you like crispy, almost crunchy, golden-brown waffles this place is it. Ever since I've tasted it, I've been searching for a place in LA or Orange County to satisfy my fix. It's even better than Pann's, although Pann's has a more extensive menu and great fried chicken as a combo. Pann's waffles are too thick for me and the batter seems more like pancake mixture, while Belgian Cafe's waffles seem like a different mix or maybe a thinner griddle for that crispiness that drives my obsession. Don't even think of ordering anything else other than the waffles at Belgian Cafe. It's just the two-hour drive from the OC and traffic that deters me from frequenting the place to my hearts content.

I like the waffles at the Watts Coffee House, 1827 E. 103rd Street. The shape is conducive to eating them with your hands, always a bonus in my book! Crispy, chewy, golden, and delicious.

The Inn of the Seventh Ray in Topanga Canyon for a perfect waffle! The taste and "doneness" of the waffle is marvelous. I order the works - fresh strawberries, strawberry yogurt sauce, whipped cream and syrup. Ahhh Waffle House, pecan waffles, yum!

Nice quest...Jane and Michael Stern (Road Food authors) talked about what makes a great American waffle on The Splendid Table last weekend.

I second the shocked comment about not visiting Roscoe's. For shame!

I sensed the pick of Canter's by the LA Mag folk was highly suspect, and you've confirmed this mightily. I applaud your Wafflequest (as well as your coining of the terms Wafflequest, Waffletastic) and fully support (emotionally, not financially) the endeavor. I would say stick to Jinky's for French Toast and not the waffles, and if you're willing to brave the wilds of an Encino strip mall, try More Than Waffles--BUT (as I posted here on LAist a while ago), don't order anything other than waffles, or you'll regret it.
