Hot Weekend Things!

It's going to be super hot this weekend, so if you can swing it, hit the beach and catch some waves and breezes to keep cool. Not brave enough to tackle the daytime high-temps? There's plenty to do when the sun goes down, too! Here are some of the things going on this weekend for a hot child in the city to do.

Friday

--Summer Sweat 2 is on tonight at Amoeba Music in Hollywood from 8:00-10:00 pm. "DJ Brett Sweat and friends serve up a simmering summertime smorgasbord of hip hop, old school and roller boogie on the wheels of steel." 6400 Sunset Boulevard, (323) 245-6400.

--Dance Downtown is happening tonight, if you'd prefer to dance outdoors to a different beat. This Friday it's a Swing beat, with The Lucky Stars performing. Dance lessons start at 6:30, and the music plays from 7:15 to 10:00, and it's all FREE! At the Music Center Plaza, 135 North Grand Avenue.

--Say The Word at the Skirball showcases Hollywood’s top writers and comedians performing fresh, original work written for their own voices. Tonight's show has Rob Cohen, Jason Kordelos, Evan Handler, and Wendy Goldman discussing self-help, hired help, first aid, roadside assistance, and guided meditations. Ages 21 and up. Tickets $8-$15. 2701 North Sepulveda Boulevard, (310) 440-4500.

The rest of the weekend is after the jump!

Saturday

--FAB Market is a monthly outdoor gallery and street festival in Downtown LA’s Artist District, and will have over 50 independent artists and designers selling original works, business resources for artists, food vendors, and live music. This event runs every 3rd Saturday throughout the Summer from Noon to 6:00 p.m. and has FREE Admission & Parking! 330 Santa Fe Avenue.

--Have an air conditioned car and a fondness for tattoos? Head out to Pomona to check out day two of the Body Art Expo, held from 1:00 to 11:00 p.m. at the Fairplex, 1101 West McKinley Avenue, Pomona.

Sunday

--The Basquiat show opens at MOCA, and runs through October 10th. We caught this one in March at the Brooklyn Museum, and really enjoyed it. Admission is $5-$8, and they are open 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sundays, with an Art Talk at 3:00 p.m. that's free with admission. 250 South Grand Avenue, (213) 621-1741.

--Shakespeare By the Sea's 2005 Summer tour lands in Rancho Palos Verdes' Hesse Park for a free performance of The Merry Wives of Windsor. Show starts at 7:00 p.m., but early arrival is suggested so you can get a spot on the lawn. 29301 Hawthorne Boulevard , Rancho Palos Verdes, (310) 217-7596.

what exactly goes on during summer sweat two? a dance party or just a dj playing music in the store?

It's just a special slice of music served up by resident DJ's at Amoeba Music with a particular interest in creating a cool party vibe. Nice to see the Brett Sweat mention.
