Ice Cream Summer: Fosselman's

fosselmansicecream.jpg

LAist has embarked on a summer oddessey through the coolly delicious world of ice cream. We've started at the top--or at least what seems to be the top--with the local "I-scream-You-Scream" perennial favorite, which is Fosselman's. Many sites list this 80 year old ice cream emporium as one of the top in the town. The interior is pure kitsch; entirely unassuming and charming with the old wooden tables and chairs and the funky throwback decor. There's no room, or need, for pretense when you're serving up cones and bowls full of the hard stuff (the content is 16 percent butterfat!) made right there on the premises of their plant and retail store on Alhambra's Main Street. This is truly premium ice cream, by definition and taste. We took sampler spoonfuls of some flavors, like Peppermint Stick (a little bite of Christmas in July) and Peach (which, according to one staffer, is the most popular flavor there, in fact, she told us people wait all year for it), and grappled with the choices. They aren't candy-laden flavors, or anything wacky or exotic, just straightforward stuff, like Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Banana Walnut, and Chocolate Raspberry. We knew there was no way we could pick, so we asked the employee what her favorite was. Without any hesitation she said Mint & Chip, so we had her scoop one up for us. LAist admits, it was pretty damn fantastic ice cream. It's the kind that doesn't melt into a puddle moments after it lands in the cup, the kind you pull off the spoon in a slow, leisurely tug. It isn't heavy, though, or too rich--it was, like Goldilocks longed for, just right. While it might not be so good for our health, it scoops up good for our wallet; our extremely generous single scoop was only $1.95. Is Fosselman's the best ice cream in LA? We'll have to keep tasting...and we'll let you know.

I could live off of Fosselman's lychee ice cream. I'd gain 300 pounds, but I'd have a smile on my face.
