(More chowhound.com tips: use ctrl-f and the search boxes. No, it's not Zagat-easy and organized. It's different. It's a discussion. SoCal is sprawling; with CH you hear voices from all over.)

Two things. First, you have to realize what Chowhound.com is. It's a volunteer-run message board for food-related discussion. That has its built-in limitations. And if you want the best hot dog and people tell you it's in the 909, then ask for the best west of the 405. You'll probably get it.

Second, the books have an odd organization, but they contain many of the top gems from postings old and new. Check them out, then decide.

Finally, if you follow the threads (and use "hot posts" to see what's new each day) you'll eat better, without question. -Cheers, SB.

Ah, Chowhound. Where should I begin? The messageboard, though rife with threads, has only a few gems of actual food/restaurant wisdom scattered throughout. It's so despicably disorganized that it's difficult to navigate, find information, or even figure out the order in which people are posting messages.

The moderators are very controlling, and some of the people there are so overly opinionated that it discourages people to participate.

I have only heard VERY negative things about these Chowhound Guides for San Francisco and New York, and if they are anything like the online messageboard, don't think that they would be helpful AT ALL for Los Angeles.
