Give the Drummer Some

It was a night for drummers at the Henry Fonda. We were underwhelmed by Mary Timony's set (choosing to lounge outside after watching for a few songs) but would've been annoyed were it not for Devin Ocampo's aerobic drumming. It's not that her music is bad -- Ex Hex appears to be filled with some nice tracks -- its just that it wasn't very interesting to watch or listen to on stage.

This is a problem when you're opening for Sleater-Kinney. We could just watch Hollywood native, Janet Weiss, drum forever. Nevermind that The Woods is one of our favorite albums of the year. Nevermind that this album seems to really showcase Carrie's skill as a guitarist and singer. Nevermind all that. When S-K is performing, all eyes should be on Janet. She even breaks out the harmonica this tour, all the while banging the bass and murdering the snare. She broke into an insanely long drum solo late in the set and, literally, without missing a beat went right into their next beat heavy track.

Damnit, Janet.

As we said earlier, go see the show. We're pretty sure tickets are still available.
