Hi Speed Chases in Hi Definition

Channel 7 has a brand new toy. KABC debuted a high definition news helicoptor on Monday. It is the first in a series of moves that will eventually bring the entire newscast into Hi-Def.

Do we really need that? We know there's great value in watching sporting events in HD but do we want to watch real life police shootouts and fatal car accidents and local fires with that much clarity? What about the situations in the past where we've seen people shot dead or in serious injury from the blurry over head cameras positioned on coptors already? LAist isn't sure it'll be a good thing to see all that more closely.

And an entire newscast in HD? There's no way Dallas Raines wants us to be able to count the wrinkles in his face or Kathy Vara wants us to be noticing how much makeup she's really wearing when we should be paying attention to the copy she's reading.

Yeah but that's like saying: do you want to see these things in black & white? They're not that pretty and uplifting, so we'll use outdated video technology to show them to you.

It's not that they want to sensationalize these disasters with high definition fanciness, merely that they are keeping up with the technology and advancing with it. Also, they are keeping up with law that will require them to make such upgrades to their equipment when the government forces HD on all of us.
