Pope John Paul II: 1920-2005

As the whole world knows, Pope John Paul II died on Saturday. He was 84.

"Our Holy Father looks very much at peace. It was very satisfying for all of us to see him so serene," said LA's own Roger Cardinal Mahony after paying respects to the Pope. USA Today visited Our Lady of Solitude Church on Sunday to see how LA was mourning his death. The Pope visited Los Angeles in 1987. The San Jose Mercury News discusses how this trip may have shaped his views on the AIDS epidemic.

Democracy Now!
, which airs locally on KPFK (90.7 FM), is focusing on the Pope today. Blase Bonpane, director of the Office of the Americas, will be on the program. Meanwhile, the paperless archives has the CIA files on the Pope.

Curious about what happens now? The Los Angeles Times considers who will be the next Pope; Yahoo! explained in 2002 how a new Pope is chosen; and, Slate, in 2003, wondered if the next Pope could be Black, Latino, American or Jew. NPR has the most conteporary explanation.

Gothamist also has coverage.
