When Summer Ends
Sunny today, but the surf has been sad. It's all physics, really, but we suspect the waves miss Wayne.
The Daily Breeze reported today that Wayne Miyata, legendary surfer from Hermosa Beach, passed away Monday. Miyata was 63.
Miyata is often credited as the first (documented) surfer to catch a ride in a barrel, a ride which appeared in Bruce Brown's cult surf classic Endless Summer. He was one of the leading big wave riders of the 60's.
A native Hawaiian, Miyata moved to the South Bay in the early 60's and in later years become known as a master board-shapter and artist.
LAist hopes he's out catching a big one, wherever he is.
