LAist Postcard from Gotham City

empire.jpg

We have a blister on our right little toe, eyes chronically bigger than our stomach, a bit of a hangover, and 399 pictures uploaded so far onto our trusty iBook. But, no matter: We love New York!

First off, we have to apologize to the fine folks at Gothamist and Six Apart, because we had to forsake their Happy Hour out of sheer exhaustion. LAist had a few too many $4 martinis yesterday in the Village at the Fat Black Pussycat, and was made to suffer through eating at the "interactive" Jekyll and Hyde afterwards--as if getting lost in the zig zag streets and being in dire need of a bathroom wasn't torture enough. We've watched polar bears frolic at the Central Park Zoo, delighted at the Jackass penguins and walrus at the New York Aquarium, eaten a famous Magnolia Bakery cupcake in front of Liv Tyler and her rock star husband, taken the Staten Island Ferry, and stopped to smell the roses at the annual Macy's Flower Show...among many other things New York. Tonight we're napping and soaking in the tub at our fabulous hotel, so we can rest up before we go watch the Circus come to town and grab some late-night hot dogs.

We like to visit like we live here (and we used to, so we're just a smidge smug) so we've got a week-long Metro card, we cross against the lights, we keep our personal belongings tight, we get our coffee regular from the corner cart, and we don't take any guff. But we can only fake it for so long; sooner or later it comes up in conversation that we're from LA. We're not ashamed of that fact--we love LA! New Yorkers are notorious to dismiss LA, and scoff at our left-coast lifestyle. A Knicks fan at the bar the other night said he just couldn't bring himself to visit his family in LA, while an enthusiastic shop worker down the street (Hi, Norman!) said it wasn't so much that New Yorkers hate LA, but that they're just jealous of the weather. Tuesday's weather was magnificent in Manhattan, perfect for strolling across Central Park, but snow's predicted for Wednesday; makes the weather-envy theory all the more plausible. But we don't care, we've got tickets to see Monty Python's Spamalot, plans for dim sum, the Met, sushi, the Basquiat show at the Brooklyn Museum, an orgasmic sandwich at Katz's Deli, and loads of shopping. We'll send you another postcard... and we wish you were here!

How is Fast Black Pussycat? I need some recommendations for my first trip to NY next month. Got any other suggestions (lounge/club type places)?
