"Lalo" Guerrero, jr.: 1916 - 2005

laist_lalo.jpg

The father of Chicano music has died. Eduardo "Lalo" Guerrero, Jr. was 88. The man should be considered a Los Angeles icon having spent most of his adult life living in and around the city. 20 years ago, he and his son, Mark Guerrero, performed "Two Generations of Mexican-American Music in L.A." at the Southwest Museum in Highland Park and have done similar performances throughout California ever since.

Recognized by The Smithsonian as a national treature, Lalo recorded music for over 60 years in every genre of Latin Musical tradition and bilingualy. Perhaps no one in music better represents Los Angeles' Latino/a roots than him.

He will be sorely missed. Dance a little to the pachuco rhythm for him this weekend, won't you?
