Peril Awaits the Uncautious Wayfarer

LAist discovered the films of Guy Maddin through a friend—a fan—and has since been enthralled by the Canadian filmmaker's aesthetic, inspired by revisiting what Maddin calls the "largely disused film vocabulary" of silent movies, like tinted stocks, deliberately-scratchy soundtracks and title cards. His fims, much like those of Hershell Gordon Lewis, are so bright and colorful, so strange and wonderful, that they become sinister and otherworldly and magical.

Presented in association with MOCA, this in-person retrospective tribute "Like a Waking Dream" includes Guy Maddin’s Twilight of the Ice Nymphs, Tales from the Gimli Hospital, Archangel, Careful, Cowards Bend the Knee, The Heart Of The World, and other features and shorts. In addition Guy Maddin will present a carte blanche—a selection of films that influenced him as a filmmaker.

Other incredible film events this weekend:

70mm films at the Egyptian, most notably "Playtime." This is a very rare print and an amazing opportunity to see it the way it was intended. Also they are showing 70mm shorts on Saturday afternoon.

"The Big Red One" has been reconstructed and remastered. Jonathan Rosenbaum (of the "Chicago Reader") picked this as the best film of last year. At the Nuart this week.
