Say Hello to Charley?

A new names has surfaced in the Dodgers search for Ross Porter's replacement. According to a report in Newsday, Charley Steiner is close to joining the Dodgers. While we are still upset Ross Porter is gone, Steiner would be a good hire for the Dodgers.

Best known for his work at ESPN (who can forget the SportsCenter ad where he shouts: "Follow me to Freedom!"), Steiner has always been one of the most underrated play-by-play announcers in the business. His play-by-play for ESPN Radio was excellent, but unfortunately for the last three years, he's been brought down by working Yankee games alongside idiotic and annoying John Sterling who can't say the word "the" in fewer than 4 seconds.

LA fans may not have Ross, but they will come to like the gruff, yet well-toned voice of Steiner. In the meantime, the LA Times reports that Steve Sax and Al Downing may wind up as the new commentators. Downing is well-respected in the broadcasting world and is as good as anyone the Dodgers could hire. I haven't heard Steve Sax on the air before, but he was one of my favorite players as a kid... so maybe he'd be alright too.
