USC fulfilled its general season goal by beating Arizona 49-9 and clinching a Rose Bowl berth. Now the Trojans are focused on the greater prize, the Orange Bowl and BCS Championships.
And now the controversy can begin all over again.
Because the BCS ignored the question "What happens if there are three undefeated teams?" we find ourselves in another mess. With USC, Oklahoma, and Auburn all unbeaten, USC likely needs the continued goodwill of poll voters and the winning computer formula to make it to Miami... assuming it beats Notre Dame and UCLA.
In the meantime, LAist asks USC fans to stand up for themselves when Auburn and SEC fans claim USC benefitted from a weak schedule. Anyone who has seen a handful of SEC games this year knows it's a watered-down conference. Auburn's only two big wins, over Georgia and Tennessee, are against some of the most overrated teams in college football. Tennessee has issues at quarterback and lost to Notre Dame. Georgia doesn't have anything resembling an offense, and has gotten very lucky with some of its wins.
Maybe LAist would have more respect for Auburn if they had scheduled tougher nonconference opponents than Louisiana-Monroe, The Citadel, and Lousiana Tech.
USC always tries to play a tough nonconference schedule. This year they added Virginia Tech. They always play Notre Dame who is supposed to be good. And they don't shy from good mid-majors like BYU and Colorado State, teams which other schools are afraid to play. The Trojans also beat three top-25 teams in Cal (No. 4), Virginia Tech (No. 15), and Arizona State (who pummeled Iowa). Oklahoma is the only other team who can say that.
On another note, LAist would like to congratulate UCLA Head Coach Karl Dorrell on the Bruins big win over Oregon. Not only did the win may UCLA bowl eligible (Insight Bowl, here we come!), but it also assured Dorrell would keep his job for another year.
Yes, there were UCLA boosters who have been privately begging for Athletic Director Dan Guerrero to fire Dorrell and hire someone like Steve Spurrier, but that's probably not going to happen. The Bruins will just continue to be the average football team across town with the coach no one in the media likes.

You remind me of the big bully in middle school who picked on the little kids for being little. Dony blame the SEC that your conference has nobody to challenge USC. The SEC has a well balanced unit of top 25 teams. It is a challenge to come out on top in the conference and any team that can go undefeated deserves respect. Nobody is ever expected to win, unlike your USC team that is not only expected to win, but by a margin of 30 points. Must be real exiting to watch. At least the SEC games bring a level of exitement to the table where games go down to the last 2 minutes almost every time.
Brian, maybe you'd be more comfortable having your views validated on Gothamist where the East Coast bias reigns, and they can't stop themselves from kissing Auburn's overrated butt.
I live in Orange County so I have no use to read an east coast blog. I went to UGA and we got our asses handed to us this weekend. But I still defend the SEC. Auburn has actually climbed up in the polls 15 spots unlike USC who started at #1. Way to go BCS for implementing preseason predictions and opinions into the point system. I dont hate USC, just the BCS system.
C'mon, the Pac-10 can't compare to the SEC as far as competition - at least not this year. Other than the Cal game, their road to clinching the Pac-10 championship has been a CAKEWALK. And they don't have to worry about a Pac-10 championship game either. I'd have NO PROBLEM voting for Auburn or Oklahoma over USC, if it were up to me.
Of course, I might be a little biased.
Anyway, we'll see what happpens Dec 4 against that "average football team across town". Go Bruins!!
I find it interesting that last year, Pete Carroll didn't complain one bit about going to the rose bowl, and splitting the title. Now the tables are turned, and all I hear are complaints on how unfair the BCS system is. The polls and 'puters are part of the fun. This is college, remember.
And, the rankings aren't about who plays the most exciting games. If that's the case, then i guess Notre Dame, Texas, and Oklahoma should be the top 3 teams. *rolls eyes*
Cheers,
Justin, who lives in Brooklyn but has use for a West Coast website.
This should not be about Auburn and SC. Oklahoma has NO buisness being in the top 5. The Sooners have played no one but Texas.
It should be Auburn vs. SC in the title game. Period.
Agreed. Oklahoma being overrated last year was the problem last year, and it's the problem this year.
Jason White showed us just how good he and his "#1" team was against top talent last year, losing their last two games, and I would be shocked if the outcome was any different this season.
Tigers v. Trojans, Orange Bowl....this is how it has to be. BCS be damned.
