Say It Ain't Sosa

The season just ended, but the hot stove is already getting warm. Today, the Los Angeles Times reported the Dodgers and Cubs are in discussions about a possible Shawn Green for Sammy Sosa trade.

While on the surface of things, it might seem like Dodgers fans should be thrilled to possibly acquire Sammy Sosa, LAist is not so sure. Sosa has become a headcase, who is now in the twilight of his career. Trading Green for Sosa wouldn't just be swapping undesirable contracts, because Sosa has a 2006 option that automically kicks in if he's traded. Taking on Sammy Sosa for two years at $16 million per, is an awfully expensive gamble that he'll find his old form (and smilin' attitiude) again. Plus, Green brings some more versaility and may not waive his no-trade clause.

Still, LAist believes the odds of Sosa finding his form are greater than Green's, so it's a trade proposition which could potentially work out in the Dodgers favor. It's just not a chance that seems like it's worth to take.

In the meantime, we applaud Frank McCourt and the Dodgers for one thing. We love the idea of starting Friday night games a half-hour later to ease fans experience with traffic congestion. Way to go.
