More Critics than Critiques

'Tis a busy night all over, so we'll skip the niceties and get down to business.

At MOCA at California Plaza, 5:00 PM brings the beginning of Immersion, with free museum admission, happy hour at Patinette, DJs, exhibition tours and lectures, and MOCA Store events. Hang out until 6:30 PM to catch Raphael Rubinstein, senior editor of Art in America, discussing the crisis in art criticism. Admission is free.

The UCLA Hammer Museum has a screening of Irit Batsry's film, These Are Not My Images (neither there nor here), "is a skewed road movie set in the near future, following the voyage of the Western filmmaker accompanied by a half-blind guide. Mixing documentary material and experimental fiction, the work questions the way reality is presented and perceived. This acclaimed film was honored with the prestigious Whitney Biennial Bucksbaum Award in 2002." The film begins at 7:00 PM.

Also at 7:00 PM, AFI at ArcLight presents a special preview screening of Stage Beauty, including Q&A with writer Jeffrey Hatcher following the film.

At the Troubadour, Indie 103 presents The Dwarves, Blood Junkies, Toys That Kill and Arigma. Doors open at 8:00 PM and tickets are $12.00 advance.

Across town, Spaceland is hosting a Gary Wilson record release party featuring Gary Wilson, Peanut Butter Wolf, Koushik, Jimmy Tamborello (of The Postal Service and Dntel), DJ Nobody, Frosty and Chow Nasty. Doors open at 9:00 PM and tickets are $10.00.

In the Knitting Factory Main Room, see Mouse on Mars, Ratatat and Junior Boys at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $12.00 advance, $14.00 at the door.

At The Scene in Glendale, see Mike Stinson, Garret Pierce and Gina Villalobos. The show starts at 9:30 PM; cover is $5.00.
