LA Dog Assistance Falters

LAist is sick and tired of hearing people say that there are no genuine people in Los Angeles. That people are so self-absorbed and self-important that if you were getting beaten by a group of hooligans outside Chin Chin on Sunset, that people would simply watch without helping.

But when your dog gets loose and you're chasing it down the street at high speeds, and your dog runs past twelve people who stand and watch as it runs by while you're yelling "Help me! Grab that dog!", the rumors of Angelenos not caring enough to help their fellow man starts to gnaw at your soul.

Yeah, yeah -- dogs have rabies. But small dogs don't have as bad a case as rabies as the bigger ones (just a small shot in your stomach) so if you see a toy dog running for his life and you don't pick it up, then LAist would like to put a hex on your soul for a lack of personal community action-taking.

Just because Los Angeles is the city that people come to from all over the rest of the country is no reason for it to be a city filled with people that don't care for their fellow man/man's best friend. We are a city packed with genuine people who care -- it's just a matter of showing everyone else it's true.

Just wanted to say thank you for this; this happened to me in March when my house near Larchmont was burgled. I came home to find the doors open and my 8-month-old husky/chow puppy missing. After driving around my neighborhood frantically yelling out the window to any passerby "have you seen...", I got upwards of 10 "yes, about a half hour ago, running that way". Why none of these people did anything to stop this adorable, far-from-mangy puppy running for her life I'll never understand. Thank god I found her myself, half a mile away.

On the other hand, since moving to LA from NY last year, I have since stopped six runaway dogs on my street and returned them to their owners. Even after no one did the same for my pup, I still do this.

Im a doglover and I still wouldnt grab anyone elses dog no matter how cute or how enthusiastically it was being chased by its owner ... plain and simple, a dog is like a person and I dont know its personality, it may love you and be suspicious of everyone else and hence bite ... this is the case with most of my friends who have rescue dogs with occasionally unpredictable personalities ...

I saw a dog run away from his/her owner at Trader Joe's and I was driving by and I was ready to jump out of my car and grab him. He was big and I have a scar on my face from a dog bite but I would have grabbed the dog without thinking twice. I cant imagine anyone allowing a dog to run passed them.

I'm on board with MCE. Sorry, but I am NOT a dog lover and I would NEVER pick up a dog. I try not to get in the way of things with teeth, esp. one running right at you. For the love of God, keep those things on leashes! Not everyone loves your dog as much as you.
