Let Him Play

The NCAA dealt a cruel blow to USC's Mike Williams by denying his reinstatement. "It's very cold and insensitive for them to deny him this opportunity," USC Head Coach Pete Carroll said.

LAist couldn't agree more. Williams worked his tail off this summer to retain good academic standing, and his entire family went out of their way to return every gift, every receipt, and everything they could find from the agent he initially hired.

What more did he need to do? Did Williams ever really have a chance of reinstatement?

This is NCAA bureaucratic power politics at its finest. Williams took advantage of a court decision to go pro, which he had no idea would be overturned. The NCAA should recognize this is an exception and not deny him a chance to further his football education. No. 1 USC will be OK against Virginia Tech on Saturday. There's still plenty of talent in Trojan land. But for the NCAA to screw Williams out of an opportunity so they could send some kind of silly message is sickening.

Worked his tail off?

I am a faithful USC alum and diehard supporter, but a C in Geography and a D in Cinema hardly constitute working ones tail off.

All the same, Miami's Willie Williams has been arrested 11 times since he's been at the school, and 7 players from Colorado's active roster are currently facing rape charges.

Meanwhile, the NCAA refuses to grant even the slightest bit of leniency (or more accurately, understanding) towards one of its true all-around studs--unquestionably one of the best players out there, as smart as any player in the game, well-spoken, and refreshingly felony-accusation free.

Here's to USC shoving the NCAA's bullshit decision down their throats with an undefeated season, and wearing Mike Williams' #1 all season long.

Where did you get his grades? I can't find them anywhere. All I read was an article in the Daily Trojan which says he received passing grades. And he was quoted as saying during finals period that it was a very trying time for him because he was constantly studying.

The point is that Williams did everything the NCAA asked of him. And it makes you wonder if there was ever any scenario in which he could have been reinstated.

But you make a great point. The NCAA fails to grant special exceptions to good people with unique circumstances like Mike Williams and Jeremy Bloom, while there are plenty of other athletes with questionable credentials representing their schools and the NCAA.
