The New York Times discovered The Legal Grind coffeehouse in Santa Monica, where patrons can obtain legal advice along with standard coffeehouse fare.
Appearing in the August 5, 2004 Business section, the piece by Regan Morris seemed more intrigued by owner Jeff Hull's efforts to franchise the concept of providing a legal resource center within a cafe-like setting. Open since 1995, we wonder if the Legal Grind cafe inspired the producers of "Ed," the recently-canceled TV series about a lawyer who practices out of a bowling alley.
Once again Los Angeles is ahead of the curve when it comes to innovative products and services. If a local bakery wants to franchise Mr. Hull's concept, LAist may consider returning to the practice of law just to work out of any establishment that could bill itself as Tarts and Torts.

Ahead of the curve? Howsabout a shout out for Law Dogs in Van Nuys (14114 Sherman Way). That hotdog stand's been in business and dispensing free legal advice (Wednesday nights at 7 p.m.) since at least the early 80s — long before The Legal Grind was even a gleam in Jeff Hull's eye.
