USC Wins Another Split National Championship

It may be July, but USC... you've just won another football national championship!

From 1939, of course.

Some football history nuts let the Trojans know that they were actually No. 1 in one of the 13 polls back in 1939, and USC is claiming the joint title with Texas A&M and Cornell. 13 polls? And you thought the BCS was messed up.

"It was brought to our attention by various individuals that we should be claiming the 1939 Trojans among our national champions," Athletic Director Mike Garrett said Monday. "We took this matter seriously, did significant research and determined this to be true."

In the meantime, USC is also taking the eligibilty of Mike Williams seriously, as he met with NCAA officials yesterday. But LAist feels that with or without Williams, USC is the odds-on favorite to win its 11th (not 10th) National Championship.

As for Cornell football, which is dealing with an incompetent athletic department, the news that they would have to share their precious 1939 Title with another team couldn't have come at a worse time. Maybe Jim Knowles can bring rare joy high above Cayuga's waters.
